BREAKING NEWS: Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala Withdraws Plea Agreement After Court Rejects Proposed Eight-Year Sentence in R228 Million SAPS Medicare24 Tender Fraud Case

Written by Terries Twananani Hlongwani (Tresh SA)

PRETORIA – Businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has withdrawn from his plea and sentence agreement with the State in the high-profile R228 million SAPS Medicare24 tender fraud case.

The development comes after the court rejected the proposed effective eight-year prison sentence, finding it to be too lenient considering the seriousness of the charges.

During proceedings, Magistrate Ignatius du Preez indicated that an effective sentence of 12 years’ imprisonment would be more appropriate. Following the court’s indication, Matlala elected to withdraw from the plea agreement, meaning the matter is expected to proceed through the normal trial process unless a new agreement is reached.

The case centres on allegations of fraud linked to a R228 million South African Police Service (SAPS) Medicare24 tender, one of the country’s high-profile corruption matters.

Further court proceedings are expected as the State and the defence consider the next steps.
