Malawian National Sought in Connection with Alleged R1 Million Jewellery Theft in Durban, KZN

A 28-year-old Malawian national is being sought in connection with the alleged theft of jewellery valued at approximately R1 million, along with R10,000 in cash, from a residence in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday, 12 July 2026.

According to the complainant, the woman has been identified as Fatima Lawerence, who is also believed to use the name Esther, as reflected on her passport. She is reportedly travelling with her five-year-old daughter.

The stolen items allegedly include a collection of antique gold jewellery, several Kruger coins, and cash. The jewellery, estimated to be worth around R1 million, holds significant sentimental value, having been passed down through multiple generations.

The complainant stated that Lawerence had been employed as a domestic worker at the residence for approximately seven years. The alleged theft was discovered when the family returned home at about 17:30 on Sunday. It is believed that she may be attempting to leave South Africa and travel to Malawi.

Anyone with information that could assist in locating Lawerence is urged to contact Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) on 086 1234 333.

As with all allegations, any investigation and potential criminal charges remain subject to the findings of the relevant law enforcement authorities
