Businessman Arrested Over Alleged R800,000 Property Damage in Polokwane

POLOKWANE – A 51-year-old businessman has been arrested in connection with two alleged incidents of malicious damage to property following an intelligence-driven operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo.
The suspect was arrested on Monday, 13 July 2026, at his home in the Welgelegen suburb of Polokwane after members of the Provincial Tracking Team and the Provincial Investigation Unit executed a warrant of arrest.
According to police, the charges relate to two incidents that allegedly occurred on 28 June 2026. Investigators allege that at around 4:30am, the suspect set fire to a rehabilitation centre signboard in Ladanna near Dendron Road before travelling to Seshego Zone 3, where a Toyota Hilux Extended Cab was allegedly deliberately set alight.
The fire extensively damaged the vehicle before spreading to part of a nearby house where seven people were asleep. Neighbours responded quickly and managed to extinguish the blaze, preventing further damage and possible injuries. Police estimate the damage at approximately R800,000.
Following extensive investigations and intelligence gathering, police allegedly linked the businessman to both incidents and obtained a warrant for his arrest.
During the operation, officers also seized a Toyota Fortuner believed to have been used in the commission of the alleged offences.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Seshego and Polokwane Magistrates’ Courts on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, facing charges of malicious damage to property.
Police have confirmed that investigations into the matter are continuing.
