BREAKING: Protest Erupts in Elim as Residents Demand Closure of Foreign-Owned Spaza Shops
ELIM, LIMPOPO – A community protest broke out in Elim on Friday, with residents taking to the streets to demand stricter enforcement of immigration and labour laws, including the closure of foreign-owned spaza shops operating in the area.
Protesters marched through parts of the community, calling on authorities to inspect businesses they believe are operating unlawfully. They also raised concerns that some employers were allegedly hiring undocumented foreign nationals instead of local job seekers.
Residents said unemployment remains one of the community’s biggest challenges and urged businesses to prioritise the employment of South African citizens who meet the requirements for available positions. They further called on the Department of Home Affairs and law enforcement agencies to conduct inspections to verify the legal status of businesses and workers.
Police were deployed to monitor the demonstration and maintain public order. By the time of publication, no official reports of injuries, arrests, or significant damage had been confirmed.
The demonstration follows similar protests in other parts of South Africa, where communities have called for stronger enforcement of immigration, labour, and business regulations. Authorities had not yet released an official statement on the developments in Elim.
