Dineo Ranaka Condemns MacG and Sol Phenduka Over Femicide-Related Banter
South African media personality Dineo Ranaka has launched a fierce public criticism of podcast hosts MacGyver “MacG” Mukwevho and Sol Phenduka following remarks made on Podcast and Chill that sparked outrage over their treatment of a missing-persons case.
The controversy centres on comments concerning Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo, a runner who went missing amid heightened concern over violence against women and reports of serial killings in Ekurhuleni.
The remarks, which were made in a light-hearted context, drew widespread condemnation on social media, with critics accusing the hosts of making jokes about a deeply traumatic situation involving a missing woman and a distressed family.
Ranaka joined the backlash in a strongly worded Instagram post in which she directly tagged MacG, Phenduka and the podcast’s official account.
She accused the hosts of turning human suffering into “shock humour” for entertainment and engagement, arguing that the remarks showed a disregard for the emotional impact on victims, families and children affected by gender-based violence.
“A child was vulnerable and in a state of panic, her mother was missing and you felt yes let’s make this shock humour???????”
Ranaka also connected the incident to previous controversies surrounding the podcast, accusing the platform of repeatedly using provocative humour when discussing women and issues involving gender.
“So you got tired of mocking our wombs and vaginas huh? Those jokes don’t work anymore huh! Now you’re mocking our corpses and orphaned children???”
She went on to describe the podcast’s conduct as “absolute bottom of the barrel filth” and questioned the broader culture of shock-driven content in South Africa’s digital media space.
Phenduka later issued a public apology, acknowledging that the comments were insensitive and uncalled for. However, Ranaka rejected the apology, arguing that it was prompted by the backlash rather than genuine accountability.
“And NO!!!!! YOUR APOLOGY IS USELESS!!!! Had you received no backlash YOU WOULD NOT have apologised,”
The controversy has once again placed Podcast and Chill under scrutiny over the limits of provocative comedy, particularly when entertainment intersects with active missing-persons cases, gender-based violence and grieving families.
The incident also raises broader questions about accountability in South Africa’s rapidly expanding podcast industry, where controversial commentary can quickly reach large audiences and generate significant public reaction.
As criticism continues, the debate has shifted beyond the specific remarks to a wider question: how far can shock humour go before it crosses the line into disrespect for people experiencing real-world trauma?
