US AmbassadUS ambassador to South Africa Leo Brent Bozell III has warned of further “severe consequences see” after his country announced a new visa restriction policy targeting certain South Africans.
The visa crackdown will impact South Africans who are involved in “race-based discrimination,” incitement of “imminent” violence against members of minority ethnic or racial groups, and/or enactment or implementation of policies that enable “uncompensated land seizures,” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Tuesday.
He claimed the South African government had failed to address these concerns since President Donald Trump’s February 2025 Executive Order.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Bozell backed Rubio’s announcement, stressing that the time for “endless dialogue” had ended.
“America has just so much patience. We want strong, and lasting relations with the South African government. It needs to show it wants the same. So far, it has shown it cares for neither,” he claimed.
“As a result, the consequences, as Iβve attempted time and again to express, are necessarily going to be severe. This visa restriction policy is only the first step in a series of escalatory measures that will show Americaβs firm resolve in this matter.”
The US has not named the specific officials it will impose visa restrictions on. However, it is thought that ANC and EFF leaders may be affected.
