JOHANNESBURG — The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has announced that 136,790 candidates have met the statutory requirements to contest the country’s upcoming Local Government Elections.
The elections are scheduled to take place on 4 November 2026, with candidates set to contest municipal seats across South Africa.
The number of qualifying candidates represents an unprecedented scale for a South African local government election and highlights the breadth of political participation expected in the upcoming polls.
The IEC is responsible for administering the elections and ensuring that candidates and participating political organisations comply with the applicable electoral legislation and regulations.
Voters will head to the polls to elect representatives who will serve in municipalities across the country.
The 2026 Local Government Elections will determine the composition of municipal councils and shape local governance and service-delivery priorities for the next term.
