Orange Farm SAPS Constable Appears in Court on Assault, Rape and Ammunition Charges
And a more legally cautious opening:
A 29-year-old SAPS constable attached to Orange Farm SAPS has appeared in court facing serious allegations including assault, rape and possession of unlicensed ammunition.
Constable Delano Thompson, who is reportedly attached to the Visible Policing unit in the Sedibeng District, was arrested last Thursday evening. During the arrest, authorities allegedly recovered live ammunition, including one R1 rifle round, five R5 rifle rounds and three pistol hollow-point rounds.
Thompson was subsequently detained at Ennerdale SAPS over the weekend. The matter is being investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), which is responsible for investigating certain alleged criminal offences involving members of the police.
The allegations have drawn attention amid South Africa’s continuing struggle with gender-based violence and femicide. Because the accused is a serving police officer, the case is also likely to raise questions about police accountability and public confidence in law enforcement.
The allegations have not been proven in court, and the accused is presumed innocent unless and until found guilty. Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation and court proceedings continue.
