Three Arrested as Police Recover Two Stolen Nissan Navaras Worth R1.5 Million in Limpopo Anti-Smuggling Crackdown
Polokwane, Limpopo — Three suspects have been arrested and two stolen Nissan Navara bakkies valued at a combined R1.5 million have been recovered during intelligence-driven anti-smuggling operations conducted in Limpopo.
The operations, carried out on Sunday, 2 August, and Monday, 3 August 2026, were led by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Provincial Tracking Team and Provincial Investigation Unit in partnership with private security and vehicle tracking companies.
The first operation followed intelligence that a stolen Nissan Navara ProMax, taken in Springs, Gauteng, on 1 August, was being transported towards the Beitbridge Port of Entry for possible smuggling out of South Africa.
Police established surveillance along the N1 South in the Westernburg policing precinct, where officers spotted the vehicle travelling at high speed. The driver allegedly ignored instructions to stop, leading to a pursuit before the vehicle was successfully intercepted.
Investigators confirmed that the vehicle had been reported stolen, and two Malawian nationals, aged 36 and 40, were arrested. The recovered vehicle is estimated to be worth R900,000.
In a separate operation on Monday, police acted on fresh intelligence regarding another stolen Nissan Navara believed to be en route to the Beitbridge border.
Officers intercepted the grey bakkie on the N1 South outside Polokwane. Preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle had been stolen in Alberton, Gauteng, on 31 July. The vehicle, valued at approximately R600,000, was recovered, and a 34-year-old South African man was arrested.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers praised the coordinated efforts between SAPS and its private-sector partners, saying the successful operations highlight the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing in disrupting cross-border vehicle smuggling syndicates.
He reaffirmed SAPS’ commitment to dismantling criminal networks involved in vehicle theft and illegal cross-border trafficking.
The three suspects are expected to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 4 August 2026, on charges related to possession of stolen motor vehicles and related offences.
Police investigations remain ongoing as authorities work to identify other individuals linked to the alleged smuggling network.
